Fitting Instructions
To fit:
- Undo the wingnut to last few threads allowing maximum flexibility.
- Put one end of the ring nosering into nostril of the calf with the spikes facing forwards and upwards, then pull across and push into other nostril.
- “Flipping” the nostril across with your index finger tends to make fitting much easier than just trying to drag it over.
- Tighten the bolt until firm and then loosen it off a fraction so the ring has just enough free play to move up and down in the nose….any looser and you will have some fall out! Firm is better than loose as the septum cartilage will compress.
- Return calf to the mother promptly and leave together for as long as necessary for the lactation to cease and to wean the calf; we suggest 4 to 6 weeks.
- Some suckling may still occur over this period – but reduced volume usually will not sustain lactation.
To remove:
- Undo the wingnut to last few threads allowing maximum flexibility and gently pull back on the nosering.
- Suggest using one glove to allow firm grip on ring and avoid a scratch or catching fingers in nosering.
- A head restraint on bail head can improve efficiency and safety.
- If a lug end has penetrated the septum (cartilage between nostrils), pulling (or pushing) the lug sideways to ‘centre’ the nosering usually works. In difficult cases twisting the nosering can assist removal.
